Midwest Selects Interview

With the Crazy Lifestyle of any artists in the industry, especially an independent Hip Hop Group you don't have much time to sit down and just talk! With a strong Mixtape behind them and the hopes for an even stronger Album in the works, Seth of the Midwest Selects took some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for me!!

Starling -First things First, Where are you from and Where are you living?

Seth - Brainerd/Baxter/Nisswa area of Minnesota is what We represent. Me and my younger Brother Nik (Wiggy) live in Baxter and Dan (D.rizz) just got back from his first school year at UND and is living in Nisswa

Starling - When Did you Get started with making Music?

Seth - This whole rap thing started as a joke a couple years back, just started recording songs on a little video camera and showing our friends. First song we ever recorded on a real Mic was a remix to "I'm So Hood" with us and some of our friends....hahaha. When we started taking it a bit more serious was around the time I met Dan and knew he had talent. We brought him on board, a couple people came and went along the way and about a year ago was when it truly became the 3 people that make up The Midwest Selects right now!

Starling - Where does your inspiration come from?

Seth -My Dad, Rod, raised us around music. He has been playing guitar in bands his whole life. He toured the Midwest with a band called the Stingrays from about '82 to '87 and they kicked ASS!(I've seen video) And a lot of people don't know this but when Nik and I were younger we used to come out during my Dad's shows and sing Elvis and Backstreet Boys stuff. At 10 years old I was on tables singing "I'm To Sexy"! My family is so supportive and inspire us more than anything. Shout outs to my Beautiful mom and of course my sister Tessa! I have been lucky enough to actually play keyboard in a band with my Dad recently, and seeing him perform inspires me for our live shows. Live performing is everything, My Dad taught me that!

Starling - Favorite Artist that you have worked with?

Seth - Being able to work with MOD SUN was amazing, he's so talented. Pat Brown and I have talked a lot lately and he is so smart when it comes to music and the business side. We are excited to get some work done with him as well. As of right now we have 9 confirmed artist that will be on our upcoming album "Cue" and I think we are excited about each one in it's own way. We are bringing a lot of awesome artist together on 1 album. It's a cool feeling being blessed enough to be able to do that. And also just being able to work with Nik and Dan on a regular basis make this SO much fun. We work so well together!!

Starling - What does Hip Hop and music as a whole mean to you?

Seth - Pink Floyd has done a lot for us actually. We'll sit down and watch "The Wall" (Pink Floyd's movie) and just get totally inspired to try and do something different. Music is everything though. It's the most powerful thing in the world. When it comes to Hip Hop Atmosphere is my personal Favorite. Nik and Dan are all about Tech N9ne. But really we are open to listen to new things and aren't biased towards anything. I'm on a HUGE Led Zeppelin kick right now, and Nik listens to Macklemore constantly!

Starling - How does it feel to be "The Next Up"?

Seth - It's crazy! To get any kind of recognition feels amazing. Every time someone says they like a song or had a good time at one of our shows, it just makes it all worth it. To see our people vote their asses off and get us to win that award was so epic though... We have so many loyal and amazing people. They got our back. To be honest I Struggle with figuring out ways to thank them beacuse I don't know how to ever show them how much we apperciate what they all do for us. We are always trying to come up with contest and new ways to show our appreciation towards them. I never want to lose the connection we have with all our fans... F that... We will NEVER lose this tight connection we have with our fans!!

Starling - What kind of benefits/opportunities have shown them self's sense being named by the 2012 Twin Cities Urban Music Awards, "Next To Blow Up"?

Seth - It's just something that we'll always have, and that's cool. No one can take that from us and our people. All our voters earned that award. Soon after we won the award was when the real spark kind of happen. Started talking to a lot of people that I always dreamed of talking to and working with, getting on the news and in the paper and all that haha! It's fun! I love bring our friends and our friends friends along to experience this stuff with us. I had some of my close people as well as my amazing girlfriend with at the award show itself and to see how excited they got when we won, made it so special to me. I'll never forget it!!

Starling - What's your main Goal in life?

Seth - To keep being able to bring this joy to people. To be able to grow this family we've created even further. To have the closet relationship to our fans that anyone has ever had. To be able to buy things for our families would be awesome too! And basically, no matter what happens or where we go, I just want everyone involved to know they are appreciated. That's what's important.

Starling - What Artists are you feeling these days?

Seth - Basically, every artist we got on "Cue" is an artists that I think you should check out. I think there is a lot of talent in this state, and more importantly there are a lot of really good people. People that want to work together. It's a beautiful thing! But I'd be lying if I said my favorite rappers weren't Wiggy and D.rizz haha They're my boys!

Starling - Favorite song of the moment?

Seth - Nik's favorite right now is The Town by Macklemore. My new fav is Clarity by Mac Miller. Dan doesn't really like songs, just instrumentals so he can freestyle... but if he had to pick one it's be Chip Of The Block by MGK!

Starling - Anybody you would like to Thank?

Seth - Once again I want to thank my family! My girlfriend Morganne. Tommy Martin and C-dub for havin' our back all day every day. Every listener, everyone who has came to a show, anyone who has came up to one of us just to say, "Hey, keep up the good work." Every single person who likes our status' on Facebook, Retweets our tweets when we are dropping new stuff, watches our stuff on Youtube, mentions us to one of their friends, just everyone! My biggest thanks goes out to Nik and Dan tho... Those bastards inspire the hell outta me. I feel lucky to be in a group with them. We are so blessed to have the bond and chemistry that we have, and It is only the beginning, How Exciting Is That?

That's So exciting!!! I can't wait to see where all this goes! So every one reading make sure you stay along for this amazing ride, and stay tuned for "Cue" coming soon, and you know I'll Have it here for you!!!!
